Están basadas en poemas de Francis Burdett Money-Coutts (1852-1923), que firmó sus obras con el nombre de Mountjoy. Poeta y dramaturgo, Money-Coutts era nieto del banquero Francis Burdett (1770-1844) y sobrino de la escritora Angela Georgina Coutts, baronesa de Latymer, tan notable como para mantener una larga correspondencia con Charles Dickens y haber sido retratada por Sir William Charles Ross (Nacional Portrait Gallery).

La última serie de canciones, sobre textos de Money-Coutts, fue compuesta por Albéniz en París y las dedicó a su buen amigo el compositor Gabriel Fauré, titulándolas Quatre mélodies en su primera edición.

Aunque el texto original figura en inglés, fueron traducidas al francés por Michel Dimitri Calvocoressi. las Quatre mélodies fueron publicadas en París por Rouart, Lerrolle. En la traducción de Calvocoressi aparecen con estos títulos: Quand je te vois souffrir; Le paradis retrouvé, Le refuge y Amor summa injuria. Son bellísimas canciones altamente expresivas, con un complejo acompañamiento pianístico, reminiscente del piano de Iberia, y una armonía cromática que permite un discurso modulante.

Albéniz compuso las Quatre mélodies durante el segundo semestre de 1908, es decir, pocos meses antes de su muerte, ocurrida el 18 de mayo de 1909 en la localidad vasco francesa de Cambó-les-Bains y constituyen un verdadero testamento musical del gran compositor español.

All these songs for soprano or mezzo and piano are based on poems by Francis Burdett Money-Coutts (1852-1923), who signed his works with the name of Mountjoy. Poet and dramatist, Money-Coutts was the grandson of the banker Francis Burdett (1770-1844) and nephew of the writer Angela Georgina Coutts, Baroness of Latymer, so remarkable as to maintain a long correspondence with Charles Dickens and to have been portrayed by Sir William Charles Ross (National Portrait Gallery). The last series of songs, about Money-Coutts texts, was composed by Albéniz in Paris and dedicated to his good friend the composer Gabriel Fauré. It is titled Quatre melodies in its first edition These four songs, true musical testament of the great Spanish composer, have English text, but were translated into French by Michel Dimitri Calvocoressi.
The Quatre melodies were published in Paris by Rouart, Lerrolle. In the translation of Calvocoressi they appear with these titles: Quand je te vois souffrir; Le paradis retrouvé, Le refuge and Amor summa injuria. They are beautiful, highly expressive songs, with a piano accompaniment, reminiscent of the piano of Iberia, and a very chromatic harmony that allows a modulating speech. Albéniz composed the Quatre melodies during the second semester of 1908, that is, a few months before his death, which occurred on May 18, 1909 in the French Basque town of Cambó-les-Bains.
